Legal Definition - Any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a child with a disability. The term does not include a medical device that is surgically implanted, or the replacement of such device.
Low Tech Tools - Define: low cost, does not include electronic devices, does not require a lot of training Purpose: Increase access to books, games, and activities FunctionalArea: Communication, motor, play, and literacy SampleTools: Page turners, slant boards, communication symbols, communication boards, daily schedules.
Mid Tech Tool- Define: higher cost, some electric devices included, requires a little more training to use device Purpose: Prove a voice for nonverbal; offer access to learning and social opportunities Functional Area: Communication, motor, play, and literacy Sample Tools: Adapted toys, basic switch, single-message device, multiple-message device, software, and touchscreen
HighTech - - Define: High cost, include electronic devices, requires intense training of device Purpose: Provide a vehicle for language development and learning through alternative speaking methods Functional Area: Communication, motor, play, and literacy Sample Tools: Augmentative and alternative communication system either dedicated or on a computer, iPod Touch, or iPad.
